About this expedition
Tibet is not a destination. It is an experience. It is space, silence, and altitude that gradually transform the way you see the world. The Tibet Grand Loop expedition was designed as a complete, deeply immersive journey through the heart and wildest regions of the Tibetan Plateau – from historic Lhasa, through the highest mountain passes and sacred lakes, all the way to Mount Everest Base Camp and the mystical Mount Kailash.
The journey begins in Lhasa, the spiritual capital of Tibet. It is here, in the shadow of the Potala Palace and in the labyrinthine alleyways surrounding the Jokhang Temple, that the first encounter with Tibetan culture takes place alongside the process of acclimatisation to altitude. With each passing day, civilisation slowly gives way to open space. The route winds through the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Tso lake, the monasteries of Gyantse and Shigatse, and the sweeping valleys of southern Tibet – until it finally appears: Mount Everest. Watching the sunrise from the vicinity of base camp beneath the world's highest mountain is one of those moments that stays with you forever.
The second part of the expedition heads west, towards the Ngari region – one of the most isolated and rugged areas in Asia. Here, the landscape becomes minimalist, and the road seems to have no end. Crossing vast plateaus, we arrive at Darchen, a small settlement at the foot of the sacred Mount Kailash. For many, this is the spiritual centre of the world. A peaceful trek in its surroundings allows you to absorb the extraordinary atmosphere of this place – unhurried and unrushed, moving to the rhythm of prayer flags and the silence of high valleys.
The days that follow are a journey deep into history. Zanda and the ruins of the ancient Guge Kingdom reveal a forgotten chapter of Tibetan civilisation, while the sacred lakes of Western Tibet – Peiku Tso, Tangra Yumco, and Serling Tso – captivate with their austere beauty and absolute tranquillity. These are places that few travellers ever reach, and mass tourism even less so.
The return to Lhasa passes through further high-altitude mountain passes, monumental rock formations, and – conditions permitting – Lake Namtso, one of the highest lakes in the world. It is a symbolic closing of the great loop through Tibet, one that weaves together nature, spirituality, and adventure into a single, cohesive story.
Tibet Grand Loop is an expedition for those who seek something more than a trip. It is the experience of the road, of altitude, and of open space. It is an encounter with places that remain genuinely authentic. It is an expedition after which you return with the feeling that the world is larger, and time flows differently.
