Oceans & Bush - Mozambique 4×4 Expedition

About this expedition

There are journeys that begin before you even board the plane. Just glance at the map: Johannesburg, Panorama Route, Kruger, Mozambique, the Indian Ocean, iSimangaliso, Hluhluwe… and you already know this is no ordinary trip.

This is an expedition through Africa felt with every sense.

Mornings will start with the smell of coffee brewed at camp, with the first light breaking over the savannah and with a silence in which - somewhere far off - a bird, a jackal or a hippo calls out. The days will flow without rush, without chasing kilometres, without ticking off destinations. We'll drive when Africa is waking up and arrive in daylight, with time to set up camp, wash, eat and sit around the fire.

This expedition is built for a small, tight-knit group. For people who love adventure but have nothing to prove. For those who want to truly experience the national parks - not through a tour-bus window, not in a hurry, but slowly, attentively, with room for wonder.

First, South Africa - classic safari and wilderness on a grand scale

After landing in Johannesburg we head towards the Panorama Route. It's a gentle start: first kilometres, first African landscapes, first night after the long flight. The following day brings views that hint at the scale of what lies ahead - the Blyde River Canyon area, wide open spaces and a road carrying us deeper into the bush.

Then we enter Kruger National Park.

This is one of those moments when the journey changes its rhythm. We slow down. From here on, what matters are tracks in the sand, movement in the long grass, shade beneath an acacia, tension before every bend in the road. We drive through Letaba, Satara, Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge - through some of the finest safari country in southern Africa.

There will be mornings when we head out on a game drive before breakfast. There will be long stops at waterholes where nobody is in a hurry, because elephants might emerge from the bush at any moment. There will be afternoons when we return to camp, rest in the shade and then head out again to search for lions, giraffes, buffalo, antelope and everything else that makes Kruger so addictive.

Overnights at Kruger's rest camps give this section a true expedition feel. By evening the vehicles are parked, tents are up and the day ends with dinner under an open sky. Above us: stars. Around us: the sounds of an African night. In our heads: the images of the day.

Then Mozambique - sand, ocean and wild freedom

After several days of safari we cross into Mozambique. Tarmac gives way to sand, savannah gives way to dunes and classic safari gives way to a wilder, ocean-tinged adventure.

Maputo National Park is where Africa meets the Indian Ocean. There are lakes, dune forests, elephants, birds, sandy tracks and beaches where you can genuinely feel you are far from everything. Getting there demands 4×4 vehicles, patience and a touch of expedition spirit - which is exactly the point.

For two nights we camp on the beach at Ponta Membene. This is the moment in the trip when you can step out of your tent in the morning and hear the ocean. When, after a day in the field, instead of city noise there is only the sound of waves. When sand is everywhere, and nobody minds.

And then comes the reward.

Three nights on the Indian Ocean

After days spent in parks, at campsites and behind the wheel of a 4×4, we stop for three nights at a remarkable lodge on the Indian Ocean - in the Anvil Bay / Ponta Chemucane area.

This is not ordinary rest. It is the part of the journey where you can truly breathe.

White beaches. Warm ocean. Bungalows tucked among dunes and coastal vegetation. Dinners with a view of the water. Walks with no agenda. Time for a book, a conversation, a swim, kayaking, snorkelling or simply doing nothing.

No rush. No packing every morning. No long drive ahead.

Just three days in which Africa becomes soft, warm and wonderfully quiet.

Back to South Africa - wetlands, hippos and a final safari

After the Mozambican chapter we return to South Africa via Kosi Bay and make our way to iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This is a completely different face of Africa: wetlands, lakes, the St Lucia Estuary, hippos, crocodiles, birds and beaches open to the Indian Ocean.

It is a fine place to close the expedition gently. We can take a boat cruise on the estuary, drive towards Cape Vidal, sit by the water, recover from the more intense days and enjoy the wildlife one more time.

The finale is Hluhluwe-iMfolozi - a last safari, a last morning in the bush, a last chance to encounter rhino, lion, elephant or a herd of buffalo. Then we head down towards Durban, where the route ends.

But the journey does not end.

Because expeditions like this stay with you long after you return.

This itinerary is designed for people who want to truly experience Africa, but at a sensible pace. We are not racing the map. We are not driving hundreds of kilometres every day for its own sake. Days are planned so that we leave in the morning - usually no later than 9:00 - and arrive at our destination before 16:00. That leaves time for the things that make travel worthwhile: setting up camp, washing, taking photographs, watching the sunset, having dinner and resting.

There will be nights under canvas, there will be off-road stretches, there will be drives through national parks and moments when you need to shake the sand out of your boots. But there will also be comfortable lodges, hot showers, good food, the ocean and three nights in a place you will not want to leave.

This expedition has balance: safari and beach, adventure and rest, camping and lodge, South Africa and Mozambique.

For a small group.

For people who love the road.

For those who want to feel that they are truly travelling through Africa.

Highlights

  • Panorama Route & Blyde River Canyon - Canyon, mountains, waterfalls and open space that immediately shifts your mind into travel mode. Africa reveals itself from above - vast, green and breathtaking.
  • Safari in Kruger National Park - Elephants right in front of the bonnet, giraffes among the acacias, lions resting in the shade and dust on the windscreen. You don't watch wild Africa here - you are inside it.
  • Crossing into Mozambique - A border, new roads, a different rhythm and the first kilometres on sand. This is the moment the trip becomes a real adventure.
  • Maputo National Park - bush meets ocean - In the morning we track elephants; in the afternoon we stand barefoot on the beach. Few places on Earth offer such a natural meeting of wild Africa and the Indian Ocean.
  • Three nights on the ocean - No packing, no rushing, no changing accommodation. Just beach, waves, a campfire, fresh fish and the luxury of genuinely having time.
  • Ponta do Ouro, St Lucia & Zululand - Dolphins, snorkelling, boat trips, hippos, wetlands and a final safari. An ending that makes returning to normal life very, very difficult.

FAQ

A standard international driving permit (IDP) based on your Polish licence is sufficient to drive in Mozambique. It is advisable to carry your original Polish licence as well. If you are entering with a vehicle rented in South Africa or Zimbabwe, you will also need a cross-border permission document from the rental company, as well as a carnet de passages or the vehicle's customs paperwork. Border checks in Mozambique can be thorough - keep all documents in one place and stay calm.

Mozambique is not a country for faint-hearted tarmac drivers. Beyond the main EN1 or EN6 highways you will encounter sand, river crossings, laterite red earth and waterlogged tracks after rain. During the rainy season (November-April), some sections in the north - around Niassa or Cabo Delgado - are virtually impassable without a high-clearance 4×4 fitted with a winch. Even in the dry season, the Bazaruto Archipelago area, the Vilanculos surroundings and the interior of Gorongosa require low-range gearing and proper off-road tyres. Full 4×4 drive is not an option here - it is a necessity.

Mozambique has outstanding expedition potential, but it requires an informed approach. The south - around Maputo, Inhambane and Tofo - is calm and well-established for tourism. The further north you travel, the more caution is needed: the Cabo Delgado region has been affected by armed group activity for several years and parts of the area are covered by government travel advisories. Always check the latest official warnings before departure and plan your route with us in advance. Beyond security, take malaria seriously - prophylaxis is essential. We also strictly avoid night driving on all land4travel expeditions.

No. This is an adventure expedition but involves no trekking or extreme physical effort. The most energy-demanding elements are longer driving days, game drives, the heat and border crossings.

It is not essential, but it helps considerably. The route includes tarmac, gravel and sand driving, particularly in Mozambique and Maputo National Park.

No. All overnight stays are planned at lodges, rest camps, official campsites or beach camps with proper facilities.

There will definitely be time to rest. The key recovery block is 3 nights on the ocean in the Maputo National Park area without changing accommodation, plus 2 nights at Ponta do Ouro / Ponta Mamoli.
