Madagascar: The Red Earth

About this expedition

There are places you visit. And there are places you experience with every fibre of your being. Madagascar belongs to the second category.

This expedition is for those who do not want to see the world through a coach window. For those who prefer to feel the road beneath the wheels of a 4x4, watch the sunset over the Avenue of the Baobabs, wake up close to nature, hear the ocean somewhere beyond the palm line and have the sense that every new day is the beginning of something unpredictable.

We set off for Madagascar in 4x4 vehicles — purpose-built, proven Nissan NP300 off-roaders — to drive a route that passes through some of the most extraordinary landscapes on the island. There will be red dirt roads, tropical greenery, sandy stretches, local villages, national parks, the Indian Ocean coastline and tracks that remind you that real travel begins where the tarmac ends. This is off-road in its purest form.

The adventure starts in Antananarivo — Madagascar's capital, a city full of contrasts, scents, colours and street life. After landing there is time to breathe, acclimatise and have your first encounter with the island. Then we head south and west, towards Antsirabe, Morondava and on towards one of Madagascar's greatest natural wonders — Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. Along the way there will be sand, river crossings and improvised ferry passages.

This is where the landscape becomes almost surreal. Stone needles, limestone formations, suspension bridges, paths and a rocky labyrinth create scenery that looks like a fragment of another planet. This is one of those moments when your camera cannot keep up with what your eyes are seeing and you simply stop and absorb the space around you.

But Madagascar is not only about spectacular nature. It is also about encounters. With people whose daily life moves at a gentler pace. With a culture unlike any European one. With children waving from the roadside. With local flavours, market smells, fishing villages, boats on the beach and stories that stay with you long after you return home.

The route continues through Morondava, Bekopaka, Belo sur Mer, Manja, Andavadoaka, Salary and Tuléar. Each stage has its own character. Sometimes intense and deeply off-road, sometimes quieter, close to the ocean. One day dust and river crossings, the next blue water, white sand and the feeling that you have reached the end of the world — in the very best sense.

This expedition combines off-road driving, nature, local life and rest in places you do not stumble upon by accident. Accommodation follows the character of the route — wild camping, lodges and hotels — giving the trip a genuine expedition atmosphere while remaining well-organised and safe. A support crew accompanies the group throughout and a mechanic is present on the route, providing peace of mind even where the road has surprises in store. The expedition price includes vehicle hire, camping equipment, accommodation, park entry fees, trip preparation, mechanic support and a bespoke itinerary.

This is not an ordinary holiday. It is 16 days of road, open space, the scent of the ocean, evenings under an African sky and mornings when you truly feel you are far from everyday life.

Madagascar does not promise luxury in the conventional sense. It promises something far more valuable: authenticity. Wild nature. Freedom. Adventures you will talk about for years. And that moment when you step out of the 4x4, look ahead of you and think: this is exactly why I travel.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

Departure from Poland / assembly day

The adventure begins. You pack your bag, leave everyday life behind and head towards one of the most extraordinary islands in the world. Madagascar awaits — red dirt roads, the ocean, remote tracks and an expedition that will feel like the real thing from the very first moment.

Day 2

Arrival in Antananarivo, rest and city exploration

We land in Antananarivo — the vibrant capital of Madagascar. This is a day to catch your breath after the journey, take your first look at the island and settle into its rhythm. The city welcomes you with colours, movement, scents and an atmosphere that tells you immediately: you are far from Europe.

Day 3

Antananarivo – Antsirabe

We hit the road. The first kilometres behind the wheel of the 4x4s, the first landscapes through the windscreen, the first local towns and the red dirt roads that will become the symbol of this expedition. We arrive in Antsirabe — a city known for its colonial atmosphere, local life and unhurried Malagasy pace.

Day 4

Antsirabe – Morondava

The road takes us further west. The landscape changes with every kilometre as Madagascar reveals its raw, spacious face. Morondava is the gateway to one of the island's most iconic sights — the baobabs that at sunset look like guardians of another world.

Day 5

Morondava – Bekopaka

We push deeper into off-road Madagascar. This is the day when the 4x4 expedition truly finds its character. The roads become more demanding, the pace depends on conditions and every kilometre covered brings its own satisfaction. Destination: Bekopaka — the base for exploring the famous Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Day 6

Bekopaka – Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

One of the most powerful moments of the entire expedition. Tsingy de Bemaraha is a rocky labyrinth of limestone needles, suspension bridges, passages and formations that look like the landscape of an adventure film. This place astonishes, surprises and remains in your memory as one of the absolute symbols of Madagascar.

Day 7

Tsingy de Bemaraha – Morondava

We head back towards Morondava, but on this expedition a return journey never means repetition. Different light, different emotions, a different perspective on the road. After an intense day among the rock formations comes time to breathe and meet the atmosphere of western Madagascar once again.

Day 8

Morondava – Belo sur Mer

We change the rhythm of the expedition. The road leads towards the coast and Belo sur Mer — a place where Madagascar slows down and the ocean takes centre stage. This stage is full of open space, sand, local villages and the feeling that we are reaching places well off the beaten track.

Day 9

Belo sur Mer – Manja

We leave the coast and push on through less obvious parts of the island. This is Madagascar at its rawest and most authentic, far from catalogue-holiday clichés. The 4x4s, the dust, local roads and more kilometres that build the true expedition character of this trip.

Day 10

Manja – Andavadoaka

We head towards one of the most beautiful stretches of the Malagasy coastline. Andavadoaka is a place that smells of the ocean, fishing boats and tranquillity. After days of driving comes the reward: open space, water and views that are hard to describe without using the word paradise.

Day 11

Andavadoaka – Salary

We continue along the coast. Salary is another point on the route that lets you feel the wilder, less accessible side of Madagascar. It is the perfect moment to immerse yourself in the spirit of the journey — without hurry, with the ocean close by and adventure still ahead.

Day 12

Salary – rest day on the coast

A day to breathe. After an intense route we stay in Salary to enjoy the place, the beach, the calm and the exceptional atmosphere of the coastline. This is the time to slow down, feel the sand under your feet and simply be here and now — far from everyday life.

Day 13

Salary – Tuléar

We set off towards Tuléar. This is the last major stage of the off-road section of the expedition — a moment for reflection, for the final kilometres and the final glances at landscapes that have been our home for the past two weeks. Tuléar closes the south-western chapter of the route and prepares us for the return to the capital.

Day 14

Tuléar – Antananarivo

From Tuléar we fly back to Antananarivo. After days spent on remote tracks, the view from above reveals the scale of the island and the distance we have covered. We return to the capital with luggage full of photographs, dust, stories and emotions.

Day 15

Buffer day

A day set aside as an organisational buffer. On expeditions of this kind flexibility is part of the adventure — weather, roads and local conditions can write their own script. This extra margin of safety allows the route to be completed without pressure.

Day 16

Return to Poland

Time to head home. But this is not an ordinary return from holiday. You are coming back from Madagascar — from the island of baobabs, lemurs, red dirt roads, the ocean and a 4x4 adventure. From places you do not reach by accident. And with a story you will be telling for years to come.
