Ethiopia: North and South

About this expedition

Our extraordinary journey through Ethiopia begins in Addis Abeba, from where we set out toward one of Africa's most raw and fascinating places - the Danakil Depression. This is a land of extreme contrasts, where black lava fields, endless salt flats, hot springs, acidic lakes, and colorful sulfur formations create a landscape that resembles another planet. We will climb Erta Ale - one of the few volcanoes in the world with an active lava lake - and sleep under the open sky in harsh conditions, close to the forces of nature that are unlike anything else on Earth. Danakil opens the expedition with an intensity that is primal and unforgettable.

From there, we move into a completely different Ethiopia - cooler, mountainous, and deeply spiritual. In Lalibela, we visit the famous rock-hewn churches, one of the most important symbols of the country's Christian heritage. We walk through narrow corridors, dark tunnels, and stone courtyards to stand before the monumental Bete Giyorgis - a church carved from a single block of rock. This place carries an extraordinary stillness, mysticism, and the weight of a history that has shaped Ethiopia's identity for centuries.

After the intense days in the north, we head south and west into regions that are less visited, more everyday, and more authentic. Passing through Woliso, Jimma, and Mizan Teferi, we watch Ethiopia transform from one day to the next - from green highlands through valleys and local towns to the humid landscapes of the Kaffa region, widely regarded as the birthplace of wild arabica coffee. This is a journey not only through landscapes but through the rhythm of life: roadside markets, coffee plantations, children walking home from school, women carrying water, and places where daily life has not been staged for tourists.

The next stage of the expedition takes us to the wild south of Ethiopia - the areas around Kibish, Omo National Park, and the Omo Valley. This is where we encounter the Suri, Nyangatom, Kara, and Arbore communities, each with their own traditions, symbols, dress, and ways of constructing identity. We visit villages, talk, observe daily life, and try to understand local customs with respect, without rushing and without reducing them to the role of an exotic image. This part of the expedition demands openness, attentiveness, and a readiness to encounter a completely different perspective on the world.

In Konso, we discover another face of Ethiopia's heritage - stone agricultural terraces and carved wooden waka sculptures embedded in the landscape and local culture. We then reach Arba Minch, where we take part in the Meskel celebrations - one of the most important and colorful festivals in Ethiopia. The traditional Damera ritual, fire, singing, the scent of incense, and people gathered around the flames create an extraordinary atmosphere of spiritual festivity that allows you to feel the living tradition of this country.

Our 4x4 expedition is not just sightseeing - it is a true adventure behind the wheel of legendary Toyota Land Cruisers. We cross paved roads, gravel tracks, remote open spaces, salt flats, valleys, mountain sections, and terrain where infrastructure gradually disappears and the journey takes on a genuinely expeditionary character. This is an offer for those who want to see Ethiopia from many angles: monumental and spiritual, raw and wild, green and desert-like, everyday and festive.

To close the journey, we drive through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Hawassa, where we visit the local fish market and rest by the water after the expedition's intensive days. Our final evening is spent in Addis Abeba over a traditional dinner of injera, Ethiopian music, and coffee - a symbolic conclusion to a journey through the country that gave the world arabica. This will be an expedition full of contrasts, encounters, dust, fire, coffee, spirituality, and road - a true Ethiopia from north to south.
